ADA Supports Phasing Down Use of Silver Fillings

Wednesday, July 31, 2013 by Malisano Dental

no more silver filling
The Australian Dental Association supports the United Nations Environment program's "Minamata Treaty" on mercury by phasing down the use of dental amalgams.

Silver fillings(amalgams) consist of 50% mercury , the rest being made of silver, zinc and copper.

There is a direct correlation between the number of amalgam fillings in the mouth and the levels of mercury in body tissues. How much comes from silver fillings? That's still the debate. What's certain though is that mercury is a toxin.

8 other reasons why we haven't used amalgams for 20 years.

  1. Amalgam is ugly.
  2. Amalgam break teeth (metal expands & contracts).
  3. Amalgam weaken teeth (amalgams are wedged into teeth).
  4. Amalgam lift causing decay- 50% of teeth with silver fillings have decay
  5. Amalgam attract bacteria that can cause gum disease.
  6. Amalgam wear faster than tooth coloured fillings.
  7. Amalgam is a cheap treatment compromise. It requires less skill to place them.
  8. Amalgam manufacturers (the Caulk Company) advise not using amalgam in pregnant women, children under the age of 7 and those with kidney disease.

Today there are better materials available without the potential risks.

Tooth coloured fillings don't have mercury, are more durable, strengthen teeth and look great.

Malisano Dental only uses bonded tooth coloured restorations.

For your health's sake, it's time to upgrade your silver fillings.
