There are significant dental issues to be aware of when looking beyond 50.
The teeth have been subjected to many years of chewing, clenching, drinking tea, coffee and consuming high acid foods
and drinks. As a result, the hard nonliving mineral shell (enamel) that covers the living tissue (dentine) of teeth
thins, cracks or is worn away.
The teeth then may appear darker, dull, worn, have poor colour and can become sensitive. As the enamel thins, the dentine
which is dark shows through making the teeth looked aged. Not much difference is seen when using over the counter
tooth whitening products.
The enamel can crack and peel away leaving dentine exposed to bacteria in the oral cavity. Dentine is more porous and
rougher than enamel so more bacterial plaque, calculus and stains build.
This then leads to a higher risk of tooth decay, gum disease and loss of teeth.
These changes can be prevented if they are detected early. If these changes have already occurred, Biomimetic Dentistry
and a particular tooth whitening therapy will rejuvenate your dental health, function and aesthetics.
Dr Malisano is trained to detect these changes early and to provide solutions to damaged teeth.
