Dental Health Week -Women and Oral Health

Sunday, August 07, 2016 by Malisano Dental

The fluctuating levels of female hormones during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause throughout a woman’s life can influence oral health and her risk to tooth decay and gum disease.

Women may develop tender swollen and bleeding gums at different times of the month.

This type of swelling and bleeding of the gums is more likely to harbour bacteria leading to the following:

  • Increased plaque and calculus build up
  • Increase risk to tooth decay and gum disease
  • The gums become more sensitive to toothpastes and cold drinks
  • The gums bleed more easily because the gums are more sensitive to plaque
  • Bad Breath

The gradual decline of female hormones can lead to new oral problems.

Saliva becomes more viscous and loses its efficiency to reharden the teeth and heal the mouth.

The tone of airway muscles in the back of the mouth changes increasing her risk to Sleep Apnoea.

Conditions such as:

  • Burning sensation in the mouth
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Tooth erosion or softening of enamel
  • Ulcers
  • Hypersensitivities to toothpastes (Laurel Sulphates )
  • Jaw Joint Dysfunction

Dr Malisano’s Advice:

Diligent daily oral hygiene will ensure that the teeth and gums are in the best possible condition to deal with these changing hormone levels.

Poor oral hygiene will increase the risk to gum disease, gum recession and tooth decay.

Six monthly oral health assessments to monitor oral changes and professional cleans are recommended.

Change oral hygiene products to suit your needs.

Dr Malisano can provide you with a comprehensive screening and advice.

She has seen the impact poor management has on sufferers and how correct treatment improves their quality of life.
