Keeping the Lid on Acid to Protect Your Tooth Enamel

Keeping the Lid on Acid to Protect Your Tooth Enamel

Enamel is the visible outer covering of the teeth.

It protects the inner layers of the tooth from the effects of very hot and cold food and drinks, acid and plaque.

It is the hardest and most highly mineralized material in the body. Unlike bone, it has no living cells and so it cannot regenerate.

So, if the enamel is destroyed your body cannot replace it.

The teeth are then at risk to tooth decay, nerve inflammation and tooth sensitivity where dental treatment is needed.

It is essential to do everything that you can to keep the enamel hard and healthy.

  • Avoid high acid and sugary foods and beverages.

High acid foods and drinks dissolves away tooth enamel leading to tooth erosion.

Sugary foods, acidic foods and drinks and juices (PH below 5.5) are among the most damaging to the teeth.

  • Avoid chewing very hard foods (candy, ice cubes, pork crackling) which can crack or chip the enamel.
  • Include hard cheese, yoghurt and milk (total sugars less than 10gm/100ml) as they contain calcium, phosphorus and the protein which have shown to protect the enamel.
  • Always use a fluoridated toothpaste.
  • Practise good oral hygiene habits – Electric toothbrush twice per day and flossing daily.
  • Apply GC Mousse (a topical crème with calcium and phosphate) daily after brushing and flossing.
  • Have 6 monthly oral health assessments and professional cleans.

Looking after your teeth is a lifelong continual commitment.
