Porcelain Crowns Vs Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Crowns Vs Porcelain Veneers

crown diagram

Porcelain crowns and porcelain veneers are both adhered tooth coloured restorations. They are perfect solutions for broken teeth, closing gaps between teeth, for dark teeth and for crooked teeth. However, crowns are not a conservative option on fixing teeth . Placing crowns on teeth involves taking away 0.5mm to 2mm of tooth on all surfaces of the teeth. This leaves a peg of tooth onto which the crown seats. Whereas for porcelain veneers only the visible part of the tooth is shaved ( 0.3-0.5mm) and the rest of the tooth is not touched.

Crowns are an option to fix broken molar teeth, to fix teeth that have had root canal treatment or to rehabilitate a bite. They are often recommended when there are heavy chewing forces and little tooth to work on. However, in modern progressive dental practices, this is not the general rule. Teeth break down for a reason, finding that reason offers a more conservative option to dental treatment and better long term results. In these practices, porcelain onlays and porcelain veneers are the preferred treatment because it is less destructive.

Malisano Dental is a recognized dental practice to provide general, cosmetic and complex full mouth aesthetic dentistry. Dr Malisano and her team are specifically trained to provide progressive conservative dentistry where we find solutions to your dental problems.
