Problems with Old Dentistry!

Tuesday, August 01, 2017 by Malisano Dental

The concepts of Dentistry done many years ago is very different to the present.

Today the principles of dentistry is based on using tooth-like restorations. Not only are they tooth like in colour and shape, the restorations are very similar to tooth in composition. This means the restorations are etched and bonded to teeth allowing a more conservative approach to dentistry. More tooth is saved compared to the old dentistry of silver fillings. Modern restorations are bonded to the tooth, thus sealing the tooth from bacteria.

Silver fillings, old porcelain to fused metal crowns and gold crowns are not bonded to teeth. There is a gap between the tooth and filling for bacteria to grow.

When upgrading old crowns and silver fillings, Dr Malisano sees a dark sometimes green coating on the inner layer of the teeth. This is a soft bacterial coating, similar to a lifting tile in a bathroom, which causes tooth decay. If left for too long, it can lead to bacterial infection of the nerve and ultimately a tooth abscess. Such scenarios have been linked with heart infections such as Bacterial Myocarditis, often with the person not experiencing any tooth pain.

The best advice is to adopt a 6 monthly dental health assessment of your teeth and existing dental restorations. If you do have existing old (more than 7 years) dentistry to actively plan to upgrade them before symptoms such as pain or sensitivity arises.

Dr Malisano is trained to provide biomimetic conservative dentistry. Please contact 5532 1933 or email
