sleep bruxism - tooth grinding
Sleep Bruxism (tooth grinding) is a common sleep –related movement disorder

sleep bruxism examples

It is a repetitive activity in the jaw muscles that generate tooth grinding sounds and sometimes jaw clenching. Just like snoring, generally sleep partners are the ones who complain of tooth grinding sounds.

The causes of sleep bruxism are unknown but anxiety and stress can contribute. The consequences of sleep bruxism are tooth destruction (tooth wear and fillings breaking), morning headache, jaw pain and limited ability to open the mouth. It is also a predictor for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

If left untreated, not only will your general well being be compromised but you are at risk to heart disease and diabetes. Your dental health will deteriorate rapidly leading to loss of teeth, split teeth and jaw joint degeneration and pain. If diagnosed early, sleep bruxism can be treated easily, painlessly and conservatively. Traditional night splints or night guards can make your condition worse. Dr Malisano is trained to diagnose and treat sleep bruxism.

If you have any of the following: Morning headaches, cracked teeth and fillings, scalloping of the tongue, jaw pain, limited jaw opening, cheek biting, chipped worn teeth

You may have sleep bruxism
