Mouthrinses
Mouthrinses
There are so many antiseptic mouthrinses on the market as over the counter products. It may be difficult to choose which one best suits you.
The antiseptic mouthrinses are not to replace the mechanical cleaning of your teeth – brushing and flossing. They are to be used as an adjunct to your regular oral hygiene.
Not all mouthrinses are the same in the way they control plaque formation.
The proper choice of mouthrinse depends on your needs and the purpose of its use in improving your oral health. Factors such as how long and how often to use the mouthrinse is determined by understanding your needs.
Some mouthrinses are for short term use only. Side effects such as staining, alteration in taste, hypersensitivity and ulceration can occur.
Research suggests a link between alcohol containing mouthrinses and tooth erosion, wear of tooth coloured restorations and oral cancer.
Which mouthrinse is best suited for you should be discussed with your dentist.
The dentist’s role is to assess, understand the physiological dynamics of your mouth and correlate this with which mouthrinse is best for you. Not doing so can lead to unforeseen side effects.
