Supsected link between gum disease and heart attack/stroke

Monday, March 07, 2016 by Malisano Dental

There is a growing body of research that supports a link between gum disease and Cardiovascular Disease (Heart Attack and Stroke).

Diseases of the heart and blood vessels are often related to the thickening of the walls of the arteries, a condition called Artherosclerosis.

This thickening of the walls of the artery is the result of an inflammatory change along with fat deposits.

This inflammatory damage to the artery wall is from infections of various sources.

Researchers believe that bacteria from bleeding gums (gum infection) could be one of those sources.

A recent study found that 85% of heart attack patients have periodontal disease, far higher than the connection between high cholesterol and heart attacks.

Also, half of those patients who have suffered a heart attack or stroke appeared to be healthy with normal or low cholesterol levels.

With this research in mind, it is important to know the warning signs of gum disease :

  • Gums that bleed during brushing or eating
  • Gums that feel swollen or tender
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Receding gums

Not flossing daily, not cleaning between your teeth with interdental cleaners daily, not brushing your teeth effectively twice daily soon leads to gum disease. The longer the gum disease festers the more the risk to cardiovascular disease.

Dr Malisano's message is “bleeding gums are serious”.

Do adopt a disciplined routine in tooth cleaning and have your gum health assessed every 6 months.
