Grinding / Clenching of Teeth

Is your peaceful night’s sleep being disrupted due to grinding and clenching? Neuromuscular dentistry can help you relax.

Grinding and clenching of the teeth, also known as bruxism, generally occurs while you sleep and can lead to headaches and jaw pain in your waking hours.

Bruxism generally occurs due to stresses or anxiety in your waking life.

It is often difficult to determine whether you grind during the night, in this case a partner or family member may be the first to notice your condition.

Grinding / Clenching of Teeth

Signs or symptoms of night bruxism include:

  • Headache, jaw and ear pain, particularly upon waking
  • Aching teeth, particularly upon waking
  • Stiffness of the face and temples, upon waking
  • Tooth indentations on the tongue and inside the gums
  • Tooth sensitivity

Treatment
Treatment begins with an extensive oral health examination to determine what may be causing your clenching and grinding. There are many treatment options and the most common is a custom made oral appliance that fits onto your teeth. The design of which is dependant on the outcome of your examination.
